How the Mind Connects to Spirit

In a previous post, I discussed the trinity of mind, body, and spirit, and the importance of maintaining a balance between the three, particularly when you embark on a spiritual journey such as this one. Now, it’s time to introduce another trinity within one of these aspects: The Mind.

It might not sound sexy or romantic when we are so drawn to spirit and want to spend all of our time there. However, no matter how spiritual we are, our connection with spirit and our ability to bring that connection into our lives through our physical body is always – and will always be – perceived and understood through our mind…but not in the way you may think.

It is not and cannot be a logical thought process alone. It occurs through three levels of consciousness: the Conscious Mind, the Subconscious Mind, and the Superconscious.

The Conscious Mind

The Conscious Mind is the logical, analytical part of our mind. It is responsible for many of the actions we take throughout the day. It gets us to where we need to be on time. It gets dinner on the table. It figures out a whole lot for us. We cannot live without it in this world. It analyzes our problems and then focuses on fixing them, often fixating on the problems to a fault.

Because we know how helpful it is, we often rely on this aspect of our mind for just about everything. But here’s the catch: the Conscious Mind makes up only between 5-10% of our individual mind power. The Subconscious Mind makes up the other 90-95%.

The Subconscious Mind

The Subconscious Mind controls most of what makes up our human experience. It informs our conscious mind of what to do and what not to do. Its main function is to keep us safe and alive. Our subconscious mind controls our autonomic nervous system, which keeps our body running on autopilot. It keeps our hearts beating and our lungs breathing. Our subconscious mind is also where all of our emotions live . Feelings and emotions often inform our conscious thoughts, but can also exist under the surface and remain unrecognized or unacknowledge on a conscious level often wreaking havoc on our emotions.

The subconscious mind forms our habits and patterns of behavior that we have learned over time to keep us safe. It contains our long-term memory, recording every experience we have ever had in this lifetime, as well as in past lives and between lives. Our imagination and creativity also originate in the subconscious mind, and with it, the ability to create our lives, in both positive and negative ways, based on the stories we make up in our mind and how these stories play out.

Our intuition also originates in our subconscious mind as our inner guidance system that always knows what is best for us. Most importantly, the subconscious mind is a servant. It does whatever we tell it to do…as long as it feels safe to do it.

The Superconscious.

Beyond the subconscious mind is the part of our mind that is not ours alone: the Superconscious. The superconscious is essentially all-that-is, the universe, source. It is where all information and energy and abundance exists. It is where all ideas generate from.

The Superconscious, containing all that is, is also where spirit exists. In the superconscious, we have the ability to connect with our spirit guides and any other wisdom we seek, once we learn how to connect with it.

To summarize, our mind’s connection to the spirit realm looks like this:

Conscious Mind → Subconscious Mind → Superconscious

These three aspects make up our human experience and they all serve us in some way, with the subconscious mind as the central entity. Working with the subconscious mind is the most powerful way to connect with the spirit realm and your spirit guides. Often one of the biggest doubts people express when it comes to spirit guides is the fear that it is all just in their head. It is a valid concern given that it is hard, if not impossible, to ever receive concrete proof of spirit.

Here is the thing: the connection to spirit is in your mind. In all levels of it. In fact, everything we ever experience in our lives is processed through our mind to come into our conscious awareness. Spiritual connection and spirit guides are not any different.

In fact, if the guidance we receive from our guides does not pass from the superconscious through our higher self, into our subconscious, past the gatekeeper, and into our conscious mind, we will never be able to take action on this guidance because it will never enter our conscious awareness.

Rather than fearing that it is only in your mind, I encourage you to embrace that fact that yes, it is in your mind. Simply allow it to exist there along its destined path in your life.

Don’t Get Too Caught Up in Spirit

As we begin to hear and connect with our spirit guides, our higher self, out intuition, or anything else connecting to the spiritual realm, it can be very tempting to spend all of our time there with spirit. It’s fun and exciting. It is peaceful and reassuring. It can give us a sense of purpose and clarity we don’t often feel in our minds or our bodies. Yet, it is not in our best interest to focus solely on our spiritual side and forget to take care of our mind or body for a number of reasons.

First and foremost, our minds and our bodies are what make us human. While it has been said countless time that we are spirits having a physical experience, choosing to focus only on our spiritual nature and ignoring the mind and physical nature disconnects us from our full human experience. Our soul chose to take human form and it chose our specific body as the vehicle in which it will fulfill its mission for this lifetime. If we do not accept, own and embrace our human form – our body and our mind – we cannot deliver the message we came here to share with the world.

Second, staying primarily in the spiritual side of ourselves can lead to adverse physical and mental effects, such as anxiety, lack of focus, and not caring for our bodies well. I recently experienced this firsthand. Over the past few years, I have been on a fast-track spiritual expansion. As my connection to spirit grew stronger and stronger and guidance came through more easily and clearly, I began spending more time than usual exploring these new-found gifts. Before then, I had been very intentional about staying grounded and have had some of my most profound spiritual breakthroughs when I dedicate time to grounding myself each day.

However, as I got caught up in the excitement of the new abilities I was uncovering, I let this element of my daily practice slide. Ultimately, it led to an imbalance between my mind, body, and spirit that resulted in a few rather uncomfortable panic attacks, which are a very rare occurrence for me. Fortunately, I recognized the connection early on so I was able to correct the issue by taking more time to care for my mind and my body, while also developing my spiritual gifts, before it got out of hand.

The Importance of Body-Mind-Spirit Balance

Mind, Body, and Spirit. It’s a trinity you have likely heard before. The three parts of us that comprise our human experience. While it’s a very well-known phrase and seems relatively straight-forward, I believe it is an important concept to review before we go any further on this journey together.

Body

The most straightforward part of the equation is our body. The physical vessel made of skin and bones through which our life as we know it takes place. It is also the physical representation our soul chose for this lifetime.

Mind

Our mind is responsible for all of our “doing” in life. It is made up of two major parts – the conscious and the subconscious minds. The conscious mind is in control of our logic and analysis – all of our intentional thinking. This part of the mind makes up approximately 5-10% of our individual mind power. Our subconscious mind, on the other hand, is where our feelings and emotions live. It’s where our beliefs and imagination reside. It’s where our habits and fears originate. And it’s where our our intuition and psychic abilities arise. The subconscious makes up the other 90-95% of our personal mind power. Together, these parts of our mind create all of our internal dialogue, our actions and reactions in life, which ultimately determine what we do and what we achieve in our lives, both good and bad.

Spirit

Spirit is the eternal part of us that is interconnected to all things, including our guides and the spirit realm. It is by far the most difficult to explain, because this is the part of us that science is yet to define. This will remain the case, because regardless of how much we would all love to know what spirit really is, science uses the mind to define the physical, and spirit is simply something else. Something ineffable. Unfathomable. Many of us innately know that it’s there. But after years of analytical conditioning telling us that without proof, we cannot trust that anything exists, many others doubt it. Spirit is the part of us that requires faith.

When embarking on a journey of spiritual growth and development of any kind, especially connecting directly with the spirit realm, it is important not to neglect the mind and the body. We are always connected to this spiritual side of us, but the only way we can perceive it is through the mind, and the only way we can put it into action is through our body. Even as I write right now, my spirit guide is speaking to me, but it is through my mind, by forming thoughts, and my fingers, by typing on my keyboard, that this sentence makes it onto the page. Mind, body, and spirit work in conjunction and because of this, balancing our time caring for all three is essential. It is how we foster a true mind-body-spirit connection.

Connecting with Spirit Guides and Your Individuality

Because all of us have different minds, different bodies, and different souls, our spiritual paths and how we connect to our guides will also be different. While I share my experiences, favorite techniques and exercises, and others I have tried but aren’t for me, I always encourage you to adapt and integrate any of this information and these practices as you feel called to. You can and should test out anything you feel called to and add it into your spiritual journey as you see fit.

Spirituality is Individual

I believe the individuality of the spiritual journey is something that often holds people back from fully exploring and embracing this part of themselves. As humans, we are herd animals. We have survived as a  species by sticking together and by repeating what we have survived in the past. Many institutions, from organized religious to cultural societies to schools have used this aspect of humanity to instill in us the idea that we all must do the same practices, embrace similar beliefs,, and exhibit the same behaviors, and if we do, we will all have the same results in the end.  However, spirituality is different because our souls are all here for different reasons and we’ve all had different experiences over lifetimes. As such, we will experience our spiritual journey differently. Do we all need certain things to survive? Yes. Food, water, and shelter. But do we all need the same things to thrive? Absolutely not…and it would be a very boring world if we did!

To me, to fully embrace your spiritual connection and to discover and engage with your personal spirit guides and angels, you absolutely must embrace your authenticity and your unique human experience. You much learn to know, accept, and love who you are at soul level, which is the human you came here to this incarnation to be. To do that, you get to do what works for you. In fact, it is essential that you do.

For years, I tried to connect with my spirit guides by following various methods, practices, and meditations. I would follow the instructions to a T. Dedicating myself to mastering this gift. Yet I never seemed to get anywhere. Knowing that I am a highly intuitive person, I saw this inability to connect with my guides as a failure or as a special gift I simply didn’t have even though deep down I knew we all had the ability to do it. I was troubled by the question of why, when so many other spiritual things came to me so easily, could I not seem to communicate with my guides? It made me question myself and my abilities. It made me almost give up on it. And it made me doubt spirit guides even existed.

It wasn’t until I started to follow my own rules – in other words, there are no rules! – that I realized my guides had already been sending me messages for quite some time. When it first began, I realized one had been sending me signs for nearly a year. Now I know I’ve been receiving signs since I was a teenager. The problem was that the communication wasn’t coming through in the ways I had read about and learned. It wasn’t what I expected. It was new and different. And I had been limiting myself to an imitation of others’ experiences with their guides. This is why I urge you to follow your intuition, your inner voice, those seemingly insignificant callings. Each one will be leading you to the correct next step for you on your spiritual journey.

While connecting with your spirit guides may take some time and some patience, and it may also require some trial and error, I can assure you that you do have a whole team of guides waiting for you to receive their messages. You can connect with them any time you choose, and you don’t need to go through anyone else to do it. We all do, and we all can. So please, give yourself some grace. Give yourself some time. Be patient. And most of all, allow yourself to get creative in this endeavor!

Spiritual Awakenings: Volume 1 is now available!

It’s finally here!! My very first published writing in a book collaboration on Spiritual Awakenings.

Remembering The Truth of Your Soul
Spiritual Awakenings are the pivotal moments in our lives when we remember that we are so much more than our bodies; we are infinite and eternal beings. We have always, and will always, exist.
The stories in this book share the spiritual awakenings of the authors, illuminating the uniqueness, and the shared experiences, we have as we awaken to the truth of our existence. In it, you’ll find guidance and a sense of connection to all that there is.

An excerpt from my chapter:

“Nature was always where I felt most at home. When other kids spent their weekends at slumber parties or playing video games or doing whatever the “normal” kids did, my weekends and afternoons were quite often spent with my dad at the tree farm. While my dad would be planting or mowing or shearing trees, I’d be off in the woods playing. Most often in the grove of trees my sister and I named the enchanted forest, searching for the fairies. Determined to find the source of the mysterious sounds and magical spirits I could always sense in the woods.

There was an innately spiritual element to the tree farm, though I didn’t know it as “spiritual” at the time. Rather, I saw it as magical. There was a power there that many people, especially my dad, experienced often. It revealed itself in mystical, otherworldly ways. The overgrown tree my dad would no longer shear because he saw it glowing on some evenings, though lab tests showed nothing out of the ordinary about the tree. A mysterious and irresistible force drawing him to the massive oak tree that stood at the edge of my enchanted forest that made him nervous. Events like these just happened there.

And the magic can still be felt. Visiting the tree farm last year for the first time in decades, I realized as an adult how different the air is there. It’s as though the spiritual elements of nature live actively in this plot of land. This magic lived inside me as well, as a spiritual side that grew throughout my life just under the surface. It made me feel safe, as though the world itself was always looking out for me.

At some point in what I now estimate to be my middle school years, however, the sense of safety began to give way and fear took over. Not a noticeable, anxiety filled fear. Just a cloud that wasn’t there beforehand.”

Insights on Developing Your Intuition

Developing my intuition has been an amazing journey. I have discovered some very interesting things along the way. Not only about myself, but about how intuition comes to me. So I thought I’d share some of my recent discoveries.

#1 –  Intuitive insights are a lot like dreams.

Even when I’m 100% positive I’ll remember it later because it was so clear in the moment, it often fades or blurs or I totally forget!

Writing things down immediately after my listening practice was part of the process when I learned. As I got better at doing readings, I neglected this part more often. Recently I’ve discovered just how important it is to continue doing it so I can continue growing!

So I’ve learned the importance of being intentional with my intuitive practices and writing it down, not relying on my memory alone…because that hasn’t always worked.

#2 –  My position matters. A lot.

One night, laying in bed getting ready for sleep, I began my daily listening practice. Unexpectedly, I had the sudden call to sit up. As I did, my intuition started to flow in a whole new way.

I often feel my intuition through my whole body, so sitting upright rather than laying down allowed me to tune in with my physical body much more. Tuning into your intuition in an upright and untangled position helps a ton – so uncross those arms and legs!

#3 –  Don’t overthink it!

One of the things I learned when I first started intentionally working with my intuition was to listen first, write it out second, and discern its meaning third. As my mind and intuition flow, my conscious mind loves to speak up and give her opinion during the process.

Allowing myself to simply acknowledge and then let go of the urge to discern while listening has been incredibly helpful. Because once I do, that’s when my intuition really begins to flow.

Sometimes I feel that thought of “Oh no! I need to write this down so I don’t forget!”  But I’m continuing to learn to trust the process, knowing that I’ll remember just what I need to, and know that if something is super important and I forget it, it will present itself again!

Building intuition is an ongoing practice and it’s getting stronger all the time. And maintaining that  beginners mindset is key! So often, we love to think we’ve mastered things and don’t need the basics anymore… But it’s kind of like exercise. Just because someone is an elite athlete doesn’t mean they don’t need to warm up, cool down, or practice!

Spirituality vs. Religion

So many people shy away from their innate spirituality for one big reason: Religion. They either believe spirituality is against their religion or they mistake them for the same thing. And it’s an easy mistake to make. Or maybe they had a bad experience with religion.

For thousands of years, religion has been a powerful force on this planet. In many ways, religion took over spirituality. It became the most accepted way to explain things that could not easily be understood. As Christianity spread, it even went so far as to incorporate practices and holidays from old, spirit-based religions to promote this new one.

To be clear, I don’t like to hate on religion. In fact, it fascinates me how similar so many of the world’s religions are to each other. Yet we tend to focus only on the differences. To me, religion is not separate from spirituality, but it’s not the same either. I consider religions to simply be different modalities through which people can access and make sense of their spiritual nature.

However, because of the politics and power struggles that make up the history of so many religions, the spiritual aspect as it pertains to an individual is often forgotten. “Spiritual” became an aspect of religion to strive for, rather than something we are born with. Spirit became something outside of ourselves, not part of who we are. We were told we could not connect to spirit without religious leaders or practices. And as with anything, when we are told something often enough and for long enough, we eventually come to believe it.

Yet a part of us knows deep down that somehow and somewhere we are connected to the spiritual realm and that spirit lives within us. I got lucky in that department. Growing up Catholic, I attended CCD regularly. As I was nearing the date of my first Reconciliation, I recall having a huge sense of dread. We had to confess our sins to our priest for the first time. At nine years old, talking to adults was not something I loved to do…talking to anyone was not my thing. So the idea of having to sit one on one with Father Barnes and tell him about all the horrible things I had done so far in life absolutely terrified me. What should I even say? That I didn’t clean my room when my mom told me to? That I didn’t wash the dishes? The “sins” were unbearable!

As the fateful day approached, my dad sensed my dread and asked me if I was nervous. I will never forget his response when I confirmed his suspicion. He said, rather matter-of-factly, “it doesn’t matter. You can talk to God directly any time you want to. And you don’t need to go through a priest to do it. So just tell him about the fight you got in with your sister the other day.” And my nine year old mind was blown…and full of questions. If we can talk to God whenever we want to, why are they teaching us that we can’t? And more importantly, how do we do it?!

Thinking back on that moment, it is no surprise that I always felt more connected to spirit than a lot of people around me. Unlike them, I was told from early on that I was. I didn’t have to discover it after years of soul searching. It was simply something that I accepted. However, I did need to learn how to do it and to truly believe I had that power.

Whether you consider yourself religious or not, and regardless of your past experience with religion, you are connected to spirit and you can communicate with God, the universe, whatever you choose to call it, and with your spirit guides as well. You just need to learn how to do it and how to believe in and trust the guidance you receive.

How to Get Your Mind Ready to Meet Your Spirit Guides

Communicating with spirit guides is something everyone can do. In fact, your guides are already communicating with you…but chances are you are missing their messages. Why? Because your mind isn’t ready yet. Fortunately, you can prepare yourself to connect with your guides.

Here are 5 ways you can prep your mindset to connect with your guides and receive their messages.

1. Embrace the Power of Your Mind

There are three levels of the mind to be aware of when communicating with the spirit realm.

First is the conscious mind. This is the logical, doing part of our mind that makes us take action on what we set out to achieve. We rely on our conscious mind heavily, and it is essential to our existence, yet it only represents about 5-10% of our individual mind power.

Next is the Superconscious – the universal energy where all-that-is exists, including spirit. It is where this guidance is coming from and is accessible to everyone, containing all knowledge and possibilities. The superconscious is not individual to us as humans. It is a collective energy.

Between the two lies the subconscious mind, which makes up the other 90-95% of our individual mind power. It is the bridge between the superconscious and the conscious mind. It is where our intuition, emotions, and creativity lie, as well as our habits and beliefs. This is why getting your subconscious mind on board in your spirit guide journey is so important.

2. Strengthen Your Intuition

Each and every one of us is born with an internal guidance system that assists us in connecting with the spirit realm – our Intuition.

You are an intuitive person, whether your realize it yet or not…and you don’t have to sit back and wait for your intuition to show up. You can strengthen and develop it like any skill. Connecting with your intuition intentionally and consistently helps you make better decisions faster, helps you build self trust, and assists you in connecting with your spirit guides, receiving their messages, and trusting their guidance.

Feel like your intuition could use a boost? Check out this free hypnosis recording I made to help you with this!

3. Throw Logic Out the Window

Now that we know the subconscious mind is crucial to connecting with our spirit guides, we need to take what is often the hardest step. We need to throw logic out the window. Not entirely and not forever, but it can hinder your ability to recognize your spirit guides and to receive their messages.

Connecting with spirit guides – and living any type of spiritual life – requires us to let go of logic, let go of our need to analyze, and our preoccupation with concrete proof of our experiences. Plain and simple, it is spirit. It is not material. So hard evidence will never exist except as a deep inner knowing as you learn to trust your higher self and intuition in a new way.

In the beginning, it takes faith. As you connect more, what begins as a belief or maybe only a hope soon turns into a knowing.

4. Overcoming Ego and Listening to Higher Self

Our ego is designed to keep us safe. It loves our comfort zone and it will do anything in its power to keep us right where we are, playing safe, holding ourselves back, and doing what we have survived every day of our lives doing. Above all, it fears change. But change is essential when we want to move ourselves from the comfort zone of our current existence to progressing on our spiritual journey.

Our ego uses fear and logic not to intentionally hold us back, but to keep us safe. It keeps us in our comfort zone because it perceives change as scary and dangerous. And this keeps us from connecting to our guides.

Our higher self, however, simply knows what we’re meant to do. As we learn to re-establish and trust the communication lines with our higher self, we learn to safely move past that place where our ego has been keeping us. So, how do we do this? With intention. Through meditation, mindset practices, and hypnosis.

5. Practice Receiving

One of the very first and most powerful ways to really embrace the guidance of your spirit guides is allow yourself to receive it! As I learned from coach Andrea Quinn in her book, The Quinn Essentials, we are so accustomed to doing all the time, getting as much done as we possibly can, checking everything off our to-do list, and often doing everything for everyone else that we forget to allow ourselves to receive.

That’s part of why we so often don’t hear the guidance of our higher self, from our intuition and from our spirit guides. We don’t recognize it because we’re not allowing ourselves to receive it fully.

We’re used to doing, giving and sometimes taking, but allowing and receiving are where the real magic happens. Here’s the thing about receiving…women are literally designed to receive. But after thousands of years of fitting ourselves into a patriarchal society, many of us have become the doers and the givers. Not the receivers.

Look for other opportunities in your daily life to practice receiving. This may be receiving compliments without immediately feeling the need to reciprocate (aka giving), or perhaps its in receiving help or favors from friends or family or even strangers. It can even be as simple as spending a few minutes each day receiving breath, rather than taking breath…and noticing how different it feels!

Find these opportunities and allow yourself to receive them. As you open yourself to the idea of receiving in the physical sense, you will also open yourself up to receiving guidance that your spirit guides have been trying to give you.

As you prepare your mindset to receive your guides, your guides will know you are ready to meet with them and hear their messages, and begin letting their presence known in a number of ways! And that is a post for another day 🙂

Spiritual Mindset

The Higher Self, The Ego, and Connecting with Spirit

There are two important aspects of ourselves that come into play in our spiritual journey – the Ego and the Higher Self.

That is where the Higher Self comes in.

We each have our own personal bridge to the spirit realm, and that bridge is our higher self. Let’s quickly go over what your higher self ISN’T. Your higher self is not the best version of yourself. It’s is not something you need to strive to become. It is not your soul or spirit. And it is not ever separate from you

So…what is your higher self? Your higher self is the part of you that knows what is best for you. It’s the part of you that knows at any given moment what step you should take next. And it is the part of you that connects with spirit and your spirit guides so you can get clear on your goals and your soul’s purpose in this lifetime, and how to put it all into action. In fact, it knows so strongly what you are meant to do that it will pull you away from goals you may have that seem logical and safe, but aren’t allowing you to live up to your full potential. And it’s something each and every one of us has, has always had, and will always have. We are connected to it. Essentially, it’s the bridge between your spirit that is timeless and beingless, and your current human existence.

Now, one of the most common definitions of a life purpose is a message our soul decided upon – a certain thing we are here to convey – that was chosen before our birth. We choose our human experience – our body, our parents, everything – based on how these circumstances will best help us deliver this message. The tricky part is, as we take human form, we forget what this message is and why we made those decisions. Now, that may sound a little frustrating, but it’s actually a gift…because our life experience is designed to allow us to remember that message and to live it out.

Our higher self is the part of us that does know, and it guides us in our journey to remember through speaking to us and connecting us with our spirit guides and other aspects of the superconscious. Often we hear people talk about connecting to your higher self, and that phrase is a bit of a misnomer since it implies that we are not already connected to this part of us. You are, you always have been, and always will be. But let’s not get caught up in those semantics.

Your higher self likely guided you here as a step to help you remember your purpose, remember your spiritual nature, and to combine them as you live your life. Throughout history, we humans have learned to trust and rely on outside sources, logic, and our ego rather than our higher self. Our ego uses logic not to intentionally hold us back, but to keep us safe. It keeps us in our comfort zone because it perceives change as scary and dangerous.

Our higher self, however, simply knows what we’re meant to do. As we learn to re-establish and trust the communication lines with our higher self, we learn to safely move past that place where our ego has been keeping us. So, how do we do this? With intention. Through meditation, mindset practices, and hypnosis. Our higher self speaks to us through our subconscious mind, particularly through our intuition, which we will dive into much deeper in the following chapter.

One of the biggest questions I know I had when I started this work, and one I get often and see others ask is: How do I know when I’ve connected with my higher self? Unfortunately,  there is no straight, easy answer on this one. It’s often that you just know on a deep inner level beyond logic. Fortunately there are some signals to look for.

The three biggest signs that a message is coming from your higher self are:

  1. That the message is very matter of fact and rational, though not necessarily logical – sort of like in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, when Harry takes the liquid luck and knows exactly where he should go to achieve his mission.
  2. It’ll be absent of fear – because fear comes from the ego
  3. It’ll be persistent, because your higher self is always nudging you in the right direction. If you’re getting the same inkling to do a certain thing over and over and over, chances are, it’s your higher self.

When I started connecting with my higher self more regularly, I keep getting these urges to go to the beach and to get out in nature, even though my ego was telling me I needed to work harder. Despite logic and that sense that it made no sense, it was in those moments at the beach and out in the woods that I had some of my biggest breakthroughs that led me to where I am today.

And just like everything else in life, you’ll get better at doing this, recognizing it, and trusting it the more often you intentionally connect with your higher self.  Don’t get too caught up in doing this “right” because there is no Right…that’s your ego just trying to pull you back into the comfort zone.
